Matthew Bowman: Why Many Mormons Are Uncomfortable with Mitt Romney
Matthew Bowman: Why Many Mormons Are Uncomfortable with Mitt Romney O Discurso 3 Visualizações • 7 meses atrás

http://bigthink.com

According to Matthew Bowman, author of The Mormon People, Mormons have "a fairly well developed sense of persecution and a sense...that the nation might be hostile to them." That is why, Bowman argues many Mormons are "uncomfortable with Mitt Romney's bid for the presidency."

Directed / Produced by
Elizabeth Rodd and Jonathan Fowler

Matthew Bowman: A lot of Mormons, I think, are uncomfortable actually with Mitt Romney's bid for the presidency. There is a sense in the church—and this goes back to the 19th century when in the 1830s the state of Missouri issued an extermination order saying that the Mormons have to be driven out of the state or all killed, and this was given by the governor to the state militia; Joseph Smith was killed in Nauvoo; the Mormons fled to Utah; then the federal government followed them there and stamped out polygamy through arrests and tearing all these families apart and all of that—Mormons are really . . . have a fairly well developed sense of persecution and a sense that people don't really understand them, that the nation might be hostile to them, that they could be again, at any time, made fun of or attacked or so on and so forth.A lot of Mormons feel that Mitt Romney's campaign is sort of inviting that. So there are many Mormons who say "You know I wish you weren't running at all." "I wish he was not going to be president." Now there are others who say "Well, this is good because this gives us a chance to really unpack all of this stuff and work through all of this baggage and really become American in a sense, you know, prove to the country that they don't have anything to fear from us and to prove that we are actually fully American."In 1904 a Mormon apostle was elected to the Senate and he entered the Senate from the state of Utah, and there were three years of hearings over whether or not the Senate would seat him because he was a Mormon and what—he had divided loyalties and there was this big brouhaha. The Senate debated this for three years. Eventually he was confirmed. He took his seat and he turned out to be an utterly boring middle of the road Republican senator who helped cause the Great Depression. That proved to a lot of people, well yeah, the Mormons are not going to try to undermine the Republic. They are going to be just like anybody else. They are going to be boring Republicans like Orrin Hatch is today, right? But for the Mormons there is still some apprehension about what Mitt Romney's election might mean for them, if it would be a good thing or a bad thing. Directed / Produced byJonathan Fowler & Elizabeth Rodd

He tickled my face with a feather
I smiled back
Lying blissfully on the sand
We were on our honeymoon
Sunbathing on the sea shore
Life seemed so wonderful
Too good to be true
I thought - if this is what
Marriage is all about
I should have married earlier
He seemed to read my thoughts
He moved closer to me
And brushed his lips on my forehead

Just as we were about to embrace
I felt the sand under me rumble
I shuddered and deftly turned the other side
Then the ground beside me opened
And swallowed him up
I screamed but no words would come
I tried to dig him out
But someone pulled me away
I have no idea what happened thereafter
I found myself in a hospital bed
With a bandaged head,
Heard people buzzing around and
Talking about a new Tsunami in muffled voices

Again, I tried to call out,
But I had lost my voice
All I wanted to know was
Whether they had been able to save
My beloved.
A kindly nurse bent over me and muttered
That the Almighty had been merciful
He had saved me from the earthquake
And the giant waves that followed it
I described my husband and
I asked if she had seen him
She did not reply
But from the look in her eyes
I knew the answer
I had lost my beloved to the
Wrath of the seas….

(This is not an autobiographical poem...it is the story of what happened to a dear friend)

Sandra Martyres

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/tsunami-23/

The political fraternity is an expendable race
Often the cause of a nation’s fall from grace
They never miss an opportunity to spread across
Every available nook and corner of the country.

They assiduously work towards building a group
Of sycophants to satellite around them and cater
To their every whim and fancy no matter how
Ridiculous and inappropriate it may seem

Then pretending to be agents of change they
Get involved in phoney philanthropic activities
Hoping to touch the hearts of the poor gullible
Man on the street by making false promises

If elected, they would ensure that homeless are
Given a roof over their heads and the hungry
Are assured of at least two square meals per day
What more can the have-nots aspire for from a leader

The tale changes post the election celebrations
They gracefully accept the congratulatory messages
Then go into the ceremonial huddle to supposedly plan
The best way to address the electorate’s demands

After weeks and months of planning not much action
Is really visible from the ground apart from a few crumbs
By way of policy decisions to keep the common man quiet
Then the excuses coming pouring in with a vengeance

Soon one begins to notice their families appearing
In all public places demanding special treatment
Like VIPs they have to be boarded first on aircrafts
Trains are delayed to make way for them when they are late

These are just some innocuous requests taken for granted
They can get far worse and woe betide the one who refuses
To toady to their wishes - veiled threats follow and it is
Only then that realisation dawns – never trust a politician! !

Sandra Martyres

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/politicians-7/
